The great Ron Paul was introduced to me back in 2007 during his first run for the Republican presidential nomination. A fellow stoner friend of mine told me I should check out two guys running for president who both wanted to legalize weed – Ron Paul & Dennis Kucinich. The former even wanted to go so far as to legalize ALL drugs!
At the time, legalizing (even better, decriminalizing) weed was a no-brainer to me. After all, it was a virtually harmless substance, and the tax revenue potential was enormous. The other drugs though, that seemed perhaps a bit much.
But then I started listening to what the man had to say.
His reasoning for wanting completely & totally abolish the government’s War on Drugs had nothing to do with tax revenue or whether or not consuming a particular substance was potentially harmful. Rather, his argument was based entirely around the ideas of liberty & personal freedom. What people choose to put into their bodies, he said, was none of the government’s business. People should be free to behave as they desire so long as they don’t infringe on others’ rights.
That was a very attractive argument, and it logically followed that if that reasoning applied to cannabis, then it should also be applied to anything else a free individual might want to consume.
Over this past weekend, I got to watch (via YouTube) this great man speak at a Mises Institute conference. He’s just as inspirational & just as sharp today – at 86 years old – as he was fourteen years ago when I first encountered him. There is no one else in the political world who can even come close to Dr. Paul’s status as a statesman when it comes to being a defender of liberty. Dr. Paul is indisputably the greatest to ever do it.
