On April 20, 2006, the FDA issued a memo stating, “No sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no human or animal data supported the safety of efficacy of marijuana for general medical use.”
Ironically released on 4/20, this droll missive ignored history, disregarded myriad research, and was nothing more than a weak attempt to counter state-led initiatives to nullify federal cannabis law.
Fortunately, no one really took their ranting seriously. In fact, prominent periodicals were quick to repudiate & dismiss the FDA’s claims.
British magazine The Economist wrote that the FDA’s position lacked “common sense” and also that, “If cannabis were unknown, and bio-prospectors were suddenly to find it in some remote mountain crevice, its discovery would no doubt be hailed as a medical breakthrough. Scientists would praise its potential for treating everything from pain to cancer, and marvel at its rich pharmacopoeia – many of whose chemicals mimic vital molecules in the human body.”
In the Boston Globe, Dr. Lester Grinsoon wrote, “It’s a sad commentary on the state of modern medicine and U.S. drug policy that we still need ‘proof’ of something that medicine has known for 5,000 years.”
The truth was that there were at least tens of thousands of scientific reports and journal articles from around the globe going back many years. When cannabinoid receptors were discovered in he brain in the late 1980s, more than 17,000 research papers probed the issue in the two decades that followed. European scholars Arno Hazekamp and Franjo Grotenhermen reviewed this medical literature and produced an annotated bibliography detailing hundreds of clinical studies assessing more than 6,000 patients which showed cannabis to have a measurable therapeutic impact on a wide range of maladies.
Any politician in America who still bemoans liberating the cannabis plant for use in any & all purposes is quickly dismissed as behind the times. That is a great step forward for anyone who believe in freedom, and cannabis should be looked at as a model for how to achieve freedom in other aspects of life.
