A big part of the Reagan presidential administration’s legacy is related to Nancy Reagan’s “Jusy Say No” campaign. Between that, the Comprehensive Crime Control Act, & elementary school D.A.R.E. programs, the Reagans left us a world of criminalized cannabis & all the propaganda to go with it.
Another legacy of that administration is Prozac.
These past two years have made it abundantly clear that pharmaceutical corporations wield a great deal of control over the power structure in Washington, D.C.
But that really isn’t anything new.
It has always been the case that the FDA’s approval process favors single-compound, patentable drugs. That’s why, during Reagan’s second term, it was no problem to green light a drug like Prozac while the unpatentable cannabis plant (with its 420+ naturally occurring chemical compounds) remains a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
By the end of Reagan’s presidency, nearly 1 in 10 Americans were taking some kind of “serotonin selective reuptake inhibitor” (i.e. Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, etc.) for mental health troubles. This, despite numerous studies which showed them to work no better than a placebo.
Not only that, but the side effects were (are) alarming.
Users of these drugs reported headaches, nausea, loss of appetite & libido, liver failure, bone-density depletion, and increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and suicidal behaviors.
Further, it was found that exposure to Prozac disrupted neurological development, and increased the risk of autism & newborn heart defects. Nearly 1 in 3 babies born to women taking these drugs showed signs of withdrawal.
Cannabis doesn’t have any of these problems, and it actually does have medically therapeutic benefits. In fact, many people have credited cannabis with helping to ween themselves off of pharmaceutical drugs.
By the way… Nancy Reagan was an addict – a chronic user of prescription tranquilizers.
Stop taking pharmaceuticals.
